Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is included in the Annual or Daily Worldwide Car Hire Excess Insurance policy and is applicable when travelling around the USA and Canada, as well as the Caribbean, South and Central America. It covers losses incurred deriving from damage to a rental vehicle caused by fire, vandalism, accident or volcanic ash cloud. It also provides cover for theft, even unrecoverable theft, which is sometimes called Loss Damage Waiver (LDW).
Car hire insurance is sometimes dispensable in some states of the USA and Canada, as well as other countries in North, Central and South America as it's not required by law. However, it's beneficial to have appropriate Collision Damage Waiver cover in place. Otherwise, in case you get involved in a car accident, you will still be responsible for costly bills for certain damages and losses if the unexpected happens.
